has had the pleasure to speak at other high schools, small groups and at the Renaissance Unity Church Youth Group.

"It's so very powerful for teens and young adults to
hear the messages of my experiences.  The impact of
my talk can effectively stop any one of these wonderful young people from making bad choices.

That's why it's so crucial for me to speak to teens and kids of all ages.  I have a very meaningful, significant and serious message to share with them because most young people think they are infallible to addictions but that's just not the case at all.  In fact, some of them have absolutely no clue whatsoever that many of their activities are becoming addictive!

When I speak to teens and young people about addictions they almost always make reference to drugs and alcohol.  Even though it's true that these are two of the most common and well known addictions what these kids don't often realize is that stealing a CD or a video game is committing a crime."
...Coach Scott

The National Crime Prevention Council states
that about 25% of all the people who get "caught" shoplifting are between the ages
of 13 and 17 years old.

That's often how it all starts.....
at a very young age!

"I starting stealing when I was a young teenager and guess what?  I went to Catholic school, I grew up in a loving home with great parents and I lived in a very family orientated community.

It's not about growing up in a ghetto or even not having the money to buy what you want.
My parents bought me most of what I wanted....none of that is the point!  Anyone from any economic social stature can become addicted to anything!

Kids and young adults need to be educated about other types of addictions!

Especially when I start talking about playing video games, spending time on the Internet,
overshopping and overspending they look at me like "What?", but it's so crucial that they get the message!"  ...Coach Scott

Visit any shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon or on a day when the kids have no school and what you will see is lots and lots of young kids spending lots and lots of money.  Only they're not using money.....it's called plastic!

Young girls often refer to their time at the mall shopping as "Time For Fantastic Plastic!"

All the while these young people are overspending and over shopping they are racking up some serious debt.

Myth:  Make sure your teenager gets a credit card so he or she will learn to be responsible with money.

Truth:  Getting a credit card for your teenager is an excellent way to teach him or her to be financially irresponsible.

According to school loan provider, Nellie Mae more than 54 percent of college freshmen carry a credit card.

By sophomore year, the percentage of students who own at least one card rises to 92 percent.  Nellie Mae also reports that on average, freshmen bring an average of $1,585 in credit card debt to college.

Teenagers are not being taught to spend responsibly when their parents give them a credit card!

Instead the credit card usually turns into a financially harmful substance!

An Overspending, Overshopping Addiction!

This is a serious growing problem!

Overspending and Overshopping
 are serious Addictions...and
just two of the many destructive behaviors that are devastating the values of our youth.

Compulsive addictions and
destructive behaviors are hurting our youth and young adults on a daily basis.  All the while young people everywhere are feeling troubled, scared, anxious and depressed.

These emotions make it more difficult for them to function and so many turn to drugs.  School work begins to suffer and their life begins to deteriorate!

Often they do not have anyone to turn to
 and feel isolated and alone.

These tragic issues not only effect the families
of these young people but the entire community.

Here is the story of Larry....."Larry began gambling when he was 14 years old.  He started betting on sports games with his uncle and of course, his uncle thought no harm would come of this but he couldn't have been more wrong!

Larry started off betting on baseball but pretty soon he was betting on all the sports, basketball, football, soccer and even golf, you name it!  At first Larry did pretty well.  He was making good money and so he said to himself, "this is pretty cool!"  He couldn't wait to get the sports page every day so he could work on the point spread.  Things were going so well with his gambling that soon Larry had a bookie, they're not hard to find, and then Larry discovered gambling on the Internet.

Before he knew it, Larry was staying up all night betting and then began to have problems getting to school because he was so tired.  But soon enough Larry thought to himself, "who needs school?  I'm making lots of money and I can win at gambling without an education.  "Education is for geeks!"

But suddenly Larry started losing.  I mean he was really losing and he just couldn't seem to make a good bet!  When he did win he'd put it right back in.  He tried to stop but he kept going back....he says that it was as if the computer owned him.  He was definitely addicted!

He was at it all day and sometimes all night too trying to make up for the losses.  Soon he started stealing from his parents to pay back the credit card bills he was racking up and then he started using his parents credit card numbers, punching them in just like they were his own.

Shortly after Larry started stealing his parents credit card bills from the mail box so they wouldn't find out what he was doing.  Of course that didn't last long!  When the credit card companies started calling his parents he tried to answer the phone all the time but that became impossible.

When the truth finally came out, his parents were thousands of dollars in debt.  Larry tried to kill himself.  He couldn't believe who he had become and he couldn't handle hurting his parents so much.

Larry was fortunate that his parents were supportive and they got him some help.  Larry turned his life over to God and in doing so, he found a deep connection.  Through daily prayer, reading the scriptures and journaling Larry began to get answers for his life from God, finding a new direction for his future.

It took some time and a lot of commitment on Larry's part but with his reconnection to his faith he was able to find new happiness and peace.
This was what he was seeking in gambling!"
